Children as young as 6 can be indirectly affected by movie violence, and it begins at school. It is now common for kids to be victims of bullying, from grade one through high school. About two years ago two kids about 5 and 6 killed a child about 3 in Britain. And we all know about school shootings. "But it never happens in my town," you say? A while ago in Vancouver a teenager was caught with a gun and a list of over 100 people he planned to kill. It happens in small towns too, and it is getting worse. The truth is it can happen anywhere. Being bullied can affect a child for their whole life, causing difficulties with relationships, work, and family. Sometimes those bullied can later decide to take their revenge out on the world, with dire consequences. "But children don't see violent movies, so how can a violent movie make a child into a bully?" |
Let's consider an 8 year old boy who doesn't view violent movies. But his teenage brother may watch violent movies, and so may his parents. Because of that violent movie watching, he may see his father push his mother around or even beat her. And his teenage brother may push him around. In both cases, a bigger person is taking advantage of his size to physically harm or intimidate a smaller person. The result may be that the 8 year old boy begins bullying at school, and smaller or younger kids there are easy targets for him. If he is at home by himself, he may possibly watch violent movies his parents have as DVD's, even though he was told not to watch them. And a baby sitter in charge of him for the evening may let him watch violent movies. Supporting this foundation is not going to end all bullying. But it is a start. Helping with this foundation will help start a trend towards more non violent movies being produced, and help you feel that you are at least doing something, which just might help your kids or grandkids.
